Chapter Twenty-Two

Gage

Four hours later, I strain under the weight of a barbell. As I count to twenty, my muscles bulge. This is the worst day of my life. The only saving grace is football. At this point, I’ve run and lifted until I can barely move. The same darkness I experienced before is creeping over me. This time, I don’t know if I’ll come out of it.

I drop the weight on the rubber flooring and swipe the towel over my face. It doesn’t make sense. She didn’t choose someone else over me the last time – unless she lied. Was everything in the previous twenty-four hours a fabrication? I rotate my head in a circle to ease some of the tension. Clearly, I don’t know her like I thought I did.

The gym’s loudspeaker switches to a rock number, and Gunner Sinclair and Devin Grant take turns punching each other in the biceps.

Before the next year is up, I’m betting they’re brothers-in-law. Assholes. I grind my teeth together. Why is everyone on the team finding their soulmate, and I keep getting smacked in the dick with rejection?

Jeremiah ambles up to me and throws an arm over my shoulders. “How’s it hanging, buddy?”

I glare. “I thought you were sick. You look pretty good for a guy on his deathbed.”

“Dude.” He jerks back and wrinkles his brow. “I’m not sick. I couldn’t feel better.”

What the fuck? What’s Autumn’s game? “Why did Autumn say you were both sick last night, and Felicity couldn’t come to your place?”

Jeremiah’s breath catches in his chest, and his face flames with heat. “Oh, yeah, I was sicker than a dog last night.” He drops his arm to his side and steps back.

“You’re a lying cocksucker, too. What’s going on?” My hands ball into fists, and I have to keep my arms pinned to my sides to avoid knocking his teeth out.

Even though my dad’s the head coach, he wouldn’t save me from suspension or getting canned. Hell, I don’t care that much about football, but it would derail all my plans to go into teaching afterward.

He cringes. “Fine. Autumn has this crazy idea you and Felicity would make a great couple. She spent all day coming up with excuses to keep you two together, hoping sparks would fly.”

“If she was angling for sparks of hate, she’s got them.” My head spins. Autumn wants us together. Why did she say Felicity was seeing someone else? Was that made up? Or did Felicity lie to me? Fuck. For all I know, she has a guy back in Cleveland.

“Shit.” He shakes his head. “No, those were not the ones she was aiming for. She has this stupid idea you’ve both been in love with each other but won’t admit it.”

I cross my arms. “Do you know why she told me after their high school graduation that Felicity had a boyfriend?” I need to know if everything that comes out of Felicity’s mouth is a lie.

Gunner and Devin join Tony Timmerman and chat on their way out of the guy leaving the two of us alone on our side of the gym.
